Hundreds of people converged on the courthouse lawn Friday morning and did their best to stay warm with coffee and sausage wraps as temperatures hovered in the upper 30s during the annual Cowboy Breakfast.

Event organizers said Friday’s crowd was visibly larger than last year.

“We were very pleased with the way it turned out and we are already looking forward to next year,” said Johnna Wade, city of Kerrville assistant Main Street manager.

The Main Street Program, along with the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Hill Country District Junior Livestock Show Association, hosted the breakfast.

“It was a fun event, it was well organized, well attended and has definitely grown over the past few years,” said Brian Bondy, chamber president. “And the food was excellent.”

Local 4-H students braved the cold to help serve up coffee, orange juice and sausage wraps. Shiner Smokehouse hauled its grill and 2,000 links of sausage from Shiner, east of San Antonio, and Mission Tortillas donated the tortillas.

“Shiner did a great job with the breakfast this year, and we are hoping we can get them to come back next year,” Wade said.

The highlight of the morning was the goat milking contest featuring local media celebrities and bankers and the cow chip throwing contest by area political figures.

Harold Wilson from Bank of the Hills and KVHC’s Jim Handley managed to squeeze the most milk in front of a cheering, and sometimes taunting, crowd. Kerrville City Councilman Mack Hamilton managed a perfect score, winning the cow chip throwing contest.

The fifth-year Cowboy Breakfast kicked off the 65th annual Hill Country District Junior Livestock Show, which runs Tuesday through Saturday at the Hill Country Youth Exhibit Center.

The show encompasses 31 counties in Central Texas and has become the fifth largest junior stock show in the state.

Other local sponsors included Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union, Texas Heritage Mortgage, Super S Foods and the Hardback Coffee Cafe at Hastings.
